Kruisstraat, Woenselse Markt, and Seventeen Neighborhoods

The Kruisstraat is the face of Woensel-Zuid. A long shopping street with Turkish bakeries, Surinamese eateries, Asian supermarkets, and Italian delicacies. Every Saturday, the Woenselse Markt transforms into an international market with food, flowers, and clothing. It is busy, colorful, and quite different from the city center just a few hundred meters away.

Behind the Kruisstraat are the residential neighborhoods. The Gildebuurt and Woenselse Watermolen commemorate the old village of Woensel, which was only incorporated into Eindhoven in the twentieth century. Limbeek-Noord and Limbeek-Zuid have a mixed character with gallery flats and terraced houses. Kronehoef, Barrier, and Mensfort are further from the center and quieter. Vredeoord and the Generalenbuurt offer wider streets and more green space.

It is not a homogeneous neighborhood. The differences between neighborhoods are significant. Hemelrijken feels different from Rapenland, and Eckartdal has little in common with Woensel-West. That makes Woensel-Zuid difficult to summarize, but it also offers choice.

Post-War Flats, Terraced Houses, and New Plans

The vast majority of the housing stock dates from the 1950s and 1960s. Gallery flats, apartment buildings, and terraced houses in the style of that era: functional, compact, with relatively much greenery around them. The post-war urban design with open building blocks and public gardens provides space between the buildings.

Single-family homes with gardens are more common here than in the city center. Apartments and upper floors, however, constitute the largest part of the rental housing supply. The municipality will invest significantly in improving and renovating the housing stock in this district in the coming years.

The rental prices in Woensel-Zuid are lower than in the city center, Bergen, and Strijp-S. This makes the neighborhood accessible to starters and tenants with a smaller budget. The downside: the homes are older and not always well insulated.

Five-Minute Bike Ride to the Station

Woensel-Zuid borders the city center. Eindhoven Central Station can be reached from most neighborhoods in five to ten minutes by bike. Bus lines 2, 7, 156, 305, and 406 stop at or near the Woenselse Markt, with a stop at Gildelaan a three-minute walk away.

The cycling network is excellent. The neighborhood is flat and compact, and most daily destinations are within cycling distance. A car is not strictly necessary. Parking is free or inexpensive in most zones of Woensel-Zuid, a difference from the paid parking in the city center.

Market, Multicultural Cuisine, and WoensXL

The Woenselse Markt is the focal point every Saturday. Fresh vegetables, fish, cheese, flowers, and street food from all corners of the world. On weekdays, the Kruisstraat offers the same diverse selection in shop form. It is one of the few places in Eindhoven where you can find Turkish pide, Surinamese roti, and Italian focaccia on the same street.

WoensXL, the largest shopping center outside the city center, is just in Woensel-Noord but is directly accessible. More than 160 shops under one roof. In Woensel-Zuid itself, there are several primary and secondary schools. The green strips and playgrounds from the post-war design offer space for children.
