Working Class Neighborhood with New Layers
Ondiep is one of Utrecht's oldest working-class neighborhoods. The first homes date from the 1920s and 1930s, built as social housing. An expansion followed in the 1950s. The streetscape is a mix of terraced houses and gallery flats, compact and with short streets.
Pijlsweerd has a similar history but a more varied building stock. Along the Oudenoord, the neighborhood's main artery, offices and educational institutions stand alongside residential blocks. Pijlsweerd-Zuid borders the canals and the city center. Pijlsweerd-Noord is located towards the railway line.
Zijdebalen is the newest part: a sub-neighborhood along the Vecht with varied architecture and modern homes. It contrasts with the older buildings in Ondiep and the rest of Pijlsweerd. The former Lubro factory is being redeveloped into homes.
The 2e Daalsebuurt borders Ondiep and has its own character: narrow streets with pre-war buildings, close to the center.

What to Consider
Ondiep has a past that still surfaces in search engines. The riots of 2007 were almost twenty years ago. Since then, there has been structural investment in the neighborhood: housing improvement, social support, and safety. The district is no longer an official problem area, and the reality is different from its reputation.
The atmosphere varies by street. Pijlsweerd-Zuid feels the most urban due to its proximity to the center. Ondiep has more of the character of a close-knit working-class neighborhood. Zijdebalen is more modern and attracts a different demographic.
Those who prioritize budget and want to live close to the center will find Ondiep and Pijlsweerd a serious alternative to Lombok. The homes are comparably compact, rental prices are lower, and the cycling distance to the station is shorter.
