Monumental Avenues and Quiet Residential Streets

The Maliebaan is the calling card of East. A wide, tree-lined avenue with the status of a national monument. On either side are mansions from the late 19th century, now partly used as offices or divided into apartments. The Maliesingel runs parallel and offers a green walking route.

In Oudwijk, narrow 19th-century streets alternate with wider avenues. Burgemeester Reigerstraat is the neighborhood's shopping street: baker, butcher, delicatessen, and small specialty shops. Oudwijk-Noord around Prinsenstraat has a different character than Oudwijk-Zuid near Homeruslaan and Zonstraat, where urban renewal took place in the seventies and eighties.

Wilhelminapark, laid out in 1898, forms the green heart of the neighborhood of the same name. Monumental villas and mansions surround the park. The Schildersbuurt, built in the early 20th century, has wide streets with front gardens and its own architectural character. Sterrenwijk and the Watervogelbuurt are more compact and quieter.

Wide Range of Options, from Mansion to Student Studio

Almost half of the homes in East date from before 1945. The offer is diverse: from large apartments in stately buildings around Wilhelminapark to smaller upper floors in Oudwijk and studios towards the Science Park. Approximately 65% of the homes are apartments, 27% are terraced houses.

More than half of all homes are rental properties. This makes East one of the larger rental markets within Utrecht. The neighborhood attracts a mixed public: students and PhD candidates due to its proximity to the university, young professionals due to its central location, and families due to the schools and green spaces.

The average resident in East is young and highly educated. Almost 64% have an academic background. About 28% of residents are between 15 and 25 years old, reflecting the student population.

Cycling to Everything

East is compact and flat. The city center can be reached in five to ten minutes by bike. The Maliebaan is a classic cycling route. Utrecht Central Station is a fifteen-minute bike ride away.

Biltstraat, on the northern edge of the neighborhood, is one of the city's main bus routes. Multiple lines connect East with Utrecht Central Station and the Science Park. Those traveling by car can connect to the N234 towards Bilthoven and the A27 and A28 highways via Biltstraat.

Parking is paid in most parts of the neighborhood. A resident permit is required. Most residents cycle or take the bus.

Schools, Parks, and a Stadium Around the Corner

East has ten primary schools and three secondary schools. The average distance to a supermarket is 600 meters. There are eighteen restaurants within a kilometer, concentrated around Biltstraat and Burgemeester Reigerstraat.

Wilhelminapark offers ponds, monumental trees, and terraces. Maarschalkerweerd, on the southeastern edge, is a large sports and recreation area. Galgenwaard Stadium, home of FC Utrecht, is located in the neighborhood. Emmalaan and Sint Barbara cemetery together form a green lung that extends to the park.

The Science Park of Utrecht University borders the eastern side of the neighborhood. This explains the high concentration of students and academic staff.
