Living in Utrecht as an Expat

The Utrecht International Center

Utrecht has its own expat center: the Utrecht International Center (UIC), founded by Utrecht University, the Province of Utrecht, and the Municipality of Utrecht. The center assists internationals with IND appointments, municipal registration (BRP), BSN applications, and advice on the 30% ruling.

Employees of Utrecht University and Utrecht University of Applied Sciences are exempt from fees at the UIC. Other internationals can also visit for information about living, working, and studying in the region.

Registration with the municipality is mandatory if you plan to stay in the Netherlands for longer than four months. You will need a valid passport and a rental contract. After registration, you will receive a BSN number, which is required for a bank account, health insurance, and tax returns.

The Rental Market: More Affordable Than Amsterdam

Utrecht's rental market is tighter than in most Dutch cities, but more affordable than Amsterdam. An apartment in the free sector costs an average of 1,400 to 1,800 euros per month, compared to 1,800 to 2,200 euros in Amsterdam.

Popular Neighborhoods for Expats

Oost and Wittevrouwen are the most popular neighborhoods among international researchers and academics. Close to Utrecht University and the UMC, centrally located, with Wilhelminapark and Griftpark within walking distance. The homes are characteristic: pre-war, with high ceilings and narrow streets. Rental prices are high for Utrecht.

The city center attracts internationals who want everything within walking distance. The canals, the Dom Tower, the terraces, and the station are reachable within five to ten minutes. Supply is limited, and prices are high, but the location is unparalleled.

Leidsche Rijn is popular with expat families. New-build homes, Máximapark, good school choices, and lower rental prices. Half of the new-build homes sold in Leidsche Rijn in recent years went to internationals.

The area around the Science Park is popular with researchers who work daily at the university. The tram (Uithoflijn) connects the Science Park to the city center in twenty minutes.

International Schools and University

The International School Utrecht (ISU) offers the full IB program in English, from primary school to diploma. In addition, several regular Utrecht schools offer bilingual education (Dutch/English).

Utrecht University is one of the largest universities in the Netherlands: approximately 8,900 employees and 39,000 students. UMC Utrecht has more than 12,000 employees from dozens of nationalities. Together, they form the Utrecht Science Park, the largest science park in the Netherlands.

UtrechtInc, the university's startup incubator, has guided more than 430 startups and is ranked by the Financial Times as the fifteenth best incubator in Europe. Those who work in academic research, medical innovation, or tech startups will find a strong ecosystem in Utrecht.

Language and Healthcare

Utrecht is very English-friendly, particularly in the areas around the university and the city center. Hospitality, shops, and institutions generally communicate in English without problems. It's not Amsterdam in terms of international density, but for daily life as an expat, the city is easily accessible. Learning Dutch is not mandatory but accelerates social integration.

For healthcare, the same regulations apply as in the rest of the Netherlands: mandatory basic insurance (approximately 155 euros per month, deductible of 385 euros per year). Register with a general practitioner as soon as possible. English-speaking GPs are available in the neighborhoods around the university. UMC Utrecht operates fully internationally in its academic setting.

Utrecht is a city that suits expats who prefer the calm of a medium-sized city over the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, without compromising on accessibility, culture, or international facilities.
