Lombok is located directly west of the station and the city center. Those considering renting a home in Lombok choose a neighborhood with character: narrow streets, pre-war facades, and a Kanaalstraat that comes alive seven days a week. The district has approximately 5,000 residents spread across Lombok-Oost (East Lombok), Lombok-West (West Lombok), and Leidseweg and its surroundings.

From working-class neighborhood to sought-after urban district
Lombok was built between 1880 and 1920 as a neighborhood for workers. The streets are narrow, and the houses compact. The seventies and eighties saw a period of urban renewal. Since then, the neighborhood has gradually transformed. The old workers' homes were renovated, new residents moved in, and Kanaalstraat grew into a shopping street with its own identity.
Two-thirds of the homes date from before 1945. Here you'll find communal entrance apartments, terraced houses, and apartments in subdivided buildings. In recent years, new constructions have also emerged around the Merwedekanaal and along the Billitonkade. The vast majority of the offerings are rental properties: about 68% of all homes in the district.
Kanaalstraat, J.P. Coenstraat and surroundings
The Kanaalstraat is the backbone of Lombok. International supermarkets, greengrocers, bakers, and butchers stand side by side with coffee bars and restaurants. The street is open seven days a week and attracts visitors from all over Utrecht.
J.P. Coenstraat runs parallel and has its own atmosphere. Built around 1898, with ornate facades that still define the streetscape. Here you'll find more catering establishments and specialty shops. On the Billitonkade, you overlook the Merwedekanaal, which was once dug by hand.
Lombok-West is generally quieter than Lombok-Oost. The Leidseweg connects the neighborhood to the city center and has a mix of residential and commercial activity. Further into the district are the Ulu Mosque with its minarets and the renovated Cereolfabriek, both landmarks of the neighborhood.
Ten-minute walk to the station
Utrecht Central Station is a ten-minute walk from most places in Lombok. This makes the district particularly attractive for commuters. From the station, you can travel to Amsterdam, The Hague, or Arnhem within half an hour.
The Utrecht-Nieuwegein tram line runs along the edge of the neighborhood. Multiple bus lines stop in and around Lombok. By bike, you're in the city center within five minutes. The Vleutenseweg and Leidseweg connect the neighborhood to the rest of the city.
Parking is difficult in the narrow streets. A residents' permit is required, and street parking is limited. Those without a car will notice little of this. Everything is within walking or cycling distance.
Daily life on Kanaalstraat
The amenities in Lombok are practical and close by. On Kanaalstraat, you'll find everything for daily groceries: fresh bread, vegetables, meat, and international products. Coffee bars like Zwart Goud and Koffie en Ik are regular spots for the neighborhood.
Culturally, the Cereolfabriek stands out, a former industrial complex that now offers space to creative entrepreneurs. Houtzaagmolen De Ster is on the edge of the neighborhood and is one of the few preserved industrial windmills in the Netherlands. Throughout the neighborhood, you'll find street art and murals.
Green spaces are available along the banks of the Merwedekanaal. For larger parks, you can go to the nearby Oog in Al or Leidsche Rijn.

The atmosphere varies by street. Lombok-West is quieter, Lombok-Oost more lively but also busier. In some parts of Lombok-Oost, nuisance from drug use plays a role. Go and see for yourself, walk through the streets, and talk to residents if you have doubts.
Rents are lower than in the city center or Oost, but are steadily rising. Those looking for space will find mostly compact homes in Lombok. Families who want a garden and more square meters often look at neighborhoods like Leidsche Rijn or Lunetten.
