Parks in Rotterdam: Green in a City of Concrete and Glass
Rotterdam is known for its architecture and skyline. But amidst the high-rises lie parks that make the city livable. From the Kralingse Bos with its own lake to the Dakpark on top of a shopping strip.
Rotterdam is a city rebuilt after the 1940 bombing. This resulted in wide avenues, modern architecture, and a lot of concrete. But also parks that were deliberately planned as green lungs. The municipality is working on the Green Water City 2050 plan: 20 hectares of extra greenery and a green route within 500 meters of every Rotterdamer.
For tenants, nearby greenery makes a daily difference. A park around the corner means jogging before work, lunch on the grass, children playing outside. This page covers the eight most famous parks in Rotterdam. For each park, you'll read what to expect, which neighborhoods surround it, and what it means to live next to it as a tenant.

The Kralingse Bos: a Forest with its Own Lake
With approximately 250 hectares, the Kralingse Bos is Rotterdam's largest recreational area. Half of it is water: the Kralingse Plas, a rectangular lake of about one square kilometer. The other half is forest, a native plant garden, and open grassland. The area attracts 3.5 million visitors annually.
The construction began in 1928 with specially cultivated oak trees from North Brabant, on raised ground filled with silt from the construction of the Waalhaven. The park officially opened in 1953. In the summer of 1970, the Holland Pop Festival took place here, attracting over 100,000 visitors for Pink Floyd, Santana, and The Byrds.
What you can do there: running, cycling, horseback riding, skating. On the Kralingse Plas, locals sail, row, and surf. On the west side is a sandy beach where you can swim in the summer. There's a climbing park (Fun Forest), a petting zoo, a deer park, a golf course, and several restaurants. Barbecuing is permitted in designated areas.
The Kralingen district is located directly west of the forest. These are neighborhoods with a mix of pre-war mansions and post-war apartments. Those who find a rental home in Kralingen have the forest as their backyard. Prins Alexander, east of the forest, offers more options and lower rental prices.
The Zuiderpark: the Largest City Park in the Netherlands
At 215 hectares, the Zuiderpark is the largest city park in the Netherlands. It's located in Rotterdam-Zuid, between the districts of Charlois, Pendrecht, and Zuidwijk. It's a park that has it all: forest, lawns, sports fields, allotments, water, and a petting zoo.
The sports facilities are freely accessible. Four tennis courts, a padel court, two basketball courts, two artificial turf fields, and a large skate park. Adventure Island is a playground with climbing structures, slides, and a pirate's nest. There's a dog beach, and you can canoe, kayak, and paddleboard. In the summer, the park hosts festivals like Metropolis and Boothstock.
On the west side is Landhuis De Oliphant, a historic building that now serves as a wedding and event venue. Mill De Zandweg is further along in the park. The Cultural-Historical Botanical Garden showcases crops that have been cultivated in the region for centuries.
The neighborhoods around the Zuiderpark—Charlois, Pendrecht, and Zuidwijk—offer the lowest rental prices in Rotterdam. The park compensates for what the neighborhoods lack in urban hustle and bustle. Anyone renting an apartment here has 215 hectares of greenery within walking distance.
Het Park: Rotterdam's Oldest Park
Het Park, also known as Euromastpark, is 21 hectares and Rotterdam's oldest city park. It was laid out between 1852 and 1863 by Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher, the same architects who designed the Vondelpark in Amsterdam. It has been a national monument since 2011.
The park is located in the Scheepvaartkwartier, on the Nieuwe Maas. The Euromast, 185 meters high, stands at the edge of the park and offers views over the entire city. The park itself is designed in the English landscape style: winding paths, water features, large lawns, and Rotterdam's oldest trees.
The atmosphere is different from the Kralingse Bos or the Zuiderpark. Het Park is smaller, quieter, and more of a walking park than a sports park. There is a restaurant with a terrace. In the summer, festivals and events are held there.
The Scheepvaartkwartier and Delfshaven are within walking distance. These are neighborhoods with character: the Scheepvaartkwartier is one of the few pre-war districts of Rotterdam that survived the bombing. Delfshaven, with its historic harbor and old warehouses, is one of the city's most atmospheric neighborhoods. Both offer rental homes with a central location and greenery just around the corner.
The Vroesenpark: Blijdorp's Neighborhood Park
The Vroesenpark, at 9.8 hectares, is a compact city park in the Blijdorp district. It was designed in 1929 as an ornamental park and redesigned in 1948 as a functional park. It is directly opposite Diergaarde Blijdorp, Rotterdam's zoo.
Wide lawns, walking paths, and a pond form the basis. There are bootcamp racks, and dance and yoga classes are offered. The Vroesenpaviljoen has a terrace that is packed in the summer. In the summer, food festivals and small-scale events are held there. The zoo's storks regularly visit the park to look for food.
Blijdorp is one of Rotterdam's most popular residential areas. The 1930s homes, wide avenues, and proximity to the zoo and the Vroesenpark make it desirable for families and couples. Rental prices are above the Rotterdam average but lower than comparable neighborhoods in Amsterdam or Utrecht.
The Museumpark: Culture and Greenery in the City Center
The Museumpark is approximately 8 hectares and is located in the cultural heart of Rotterdam. It was designed by Rem Koolhaas and landscape architect Yves Brunier and is divided into four zones: a paved zone, a romantic zone, an urban zone, and an orchard.
Surrounding the park are the city's most important museums: the Kunsthal, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (now accessible via the Depot), the Natural History Museum, and the Witte de Withkwartier with its galleries and restaurants. The Museumpark is the connecting space between all these institutions.
It's not a park where you go for a run. It's a park you walk through on your way to an exhibition, where you sit on a bench with coffee, or where you lie on the grass in the afternoon between museum visits. The Cool district and the Witte de Withkwartier are directly adjacent to the park. These are neighborhoods where Rotterdam's urban life is most vibrant: dining, culture, and nightlife within walking distance.
The Roel Langerakpark: Sports by the Zoo
The Roel Langerakpark is 18.3 hectares and is located in the Blijdorpse Polder, next to the entrance of Diergaarde Blijdorp. It is a park primarily designed for sports and exercise.
There is a freely accessible athletics track, a disc golf course (frisbee), a walking promenade, and sports fields. The park attracts fewer visitors than the Vroesenpark or the Kralingse Bos, making it quiet for runners and athletes who want space.
The Blijdorp and Agniesebuurt districts are within walking distance. Rotterdam-Noord offers a combination of greenery, a zoo, and accessibility that is hard to find in many other cities.

The Spinozapark: Lombardijen's Green Lung
The Spinozapark is approximately 70 hectares and forms the green heart of the Lombardijen district in Rotterdam-Zuid. The park was laid out in the 1960s as part of the urban design of the district. Lombardijen was built as a garden city, with the park as its centerpiece and homes surrounding it.
It's a spacious, green, and quiet park. No festivals, no catering, no tourists. The Spinozapark is purely a neighborhood park: walking, cycling, playing. The Lombardijen district offers affordable rental homes in a green setting. It's not the most famous neighborhood in Rotterdam, but for those seeking space and greenery without paying city center prices, it's an option few people have on their radar.
The Dakpark: a Park on the Roof
The Dakpark in Delfshaven is Europe's longest rooftop park: over a kilometer long, 85 meters wide, nine meters above street level. It opened in 2013 and was built on top of a covered shopping strip on Vierhavensstraat.
The park has themed gardens: a Mediterranean garden, an Orangery with a water staircase, a community vegetable garden, and a playground. There is a restaurant with views over the harbor. The special thing is the combination: groceries downstairs, lounging in the greenery upstairs.
The Bospolder and Tussendijken districts are directly below and next to the park. These are developing neighborhoods, with rental prices among the lowest in Rotterdam. The Dakpark is an example of how Rotterdam creatively handles limited space: if there's no room for a park, you build it on a roof.
250 Hectares of Forest in the City
The Kralingse Bos is larger than the Vondelpark, and the Zuiderpark is the largest city park in the Netherlands. Rotterdam has more park hectares than most people would expect from a city known for concrete and architecture.
Green on the Roof
The Dakpark in Delfshaven is Europe's longest rooftop park. A kilometer of green on top of a shopping strip. It's typically Rotterdam: if the space isn't there, you create it.
Green Water City 2050
The municipality of Rotterdam is working on 20 hectares of extra greenery and a green route within 500 meters of every resident. The city invests in parks, green roofs, and water storage to become climate-proof.
Rotterdam is a city that had to earn its green spaces. Where Amsterdam inherited parks from the nineteenth century, Rotterdam had to rebuild them after the bombing. The result is a mix of historic parks like Het Park, post-war green lungs like the Zuiderpark and the Spinozapark, and contemporary solutions like the Dakpark. For tenants, the same applies as in any city: the park near your home becomes your garden. On HousingMatchers, you can find all available rental properties in Rotterdam, filtered by neighborhood and price.
