Rent a Home in Blijdorp, Rotterdam

1930s architecture, Vroesenpark as your backyard, and the metro two minutes from Central Station. Blijdorp is green, quiet Rotterdam, within walking distance of the city.

Blijdorp is located in Rotterdam-Noord, directly north of Central Station. The neighborhood was built between 1928 and 1940 according to a plan by city architect Witteveen. Wide avenues, tree-lined streets, closed building blocks in the style of the Nieuwe Bouwen (New Objectivity). While the rest of Rotterdam was wiped out in 1940, Blijdorp largely survived the bombardment. The result: one of the city's best-preserved pre-war neighborhoods. Those who rent an apartment in Blijdorp live amidst architectural history, with the city center within cycling distance.

Protected Cityscape Since 2014

Blijdorp and the adjacent Bergpolder were designated as a protected cityscape in 2014. This protects what makes the neighborhood special: the wide streets, the tree-lined avenues, the closed building blocks with their brick facades, and the urban planning composition. Building and renovating are subject to strict rules. For tenants, this means an streetscape that does not change. No sprawl, no high-rise buildings, no degradation of character.

The Centraal Plan, the intersection of Stadhoudersweg and Statenweg, is the architectural heart. Monumental residential blocks with shops on the ground floor, designed as urban planning eye-catchers. The neighborhood even has an open-air museum route along its architecture.

The Statenweg and the Stadhoudersweg

The Statenweg runs as a north-south axis through the neighborhood. Shops, cafes, and supermarkets are located on the ground floor of the residential blocks. The Stadhoudersweg crosses the Statenweg and runs from the A13 towards the city center. Along both streets, you'll find daily amenities: bakeries, butcher shops, small specialty stores.

The Bentincklaan, Van Aerssenlaan, and Cornelis Muschstraat are the side streets with character. The Van Aerssenlaan is one of the few streets with ground-level single-family homes. The rest of the neighborhood consists of three to five-story portico-apartment buildings. Compact, functional, with balconies at the rear and green inner gardens that are not visible from the street.

Vroesenpark: Green Heart of the Neighborhood

Vroesenpark is Blijdorp's city park. Lawns, playgrounds, walking paths, and a pond. On Sunday mornings, residents jog circuits there. On summer afternoons, the lawns are full. The park is large enough to retreat to and small enough to run into your neighbors.

Diergaarde Blijdorp, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands, borders the west side of the neighborhood. The zoo forms a green lung that shields the residential area. The entrance is on the Westzeedijk side, ensuring that crowds and parking pressure do not affect the residential streets. For residents, the zoo is above all a piece of greenery on the edge of their neighborhood.

Portico Apartments and Upper Floors

The housing supply in Blijdorp is quite homogeneous. The 1930s portico-apartment buildings dominate. Two to four rooms, a portico entrance, balconies at the rear. The homes are well-maintained, and many owners have invested in insulation and modernization. Ceilings are higher than in post-war constructions. Windows are larger.
