Katendrecht is located on a peninsula surrounded by the Nieuwe Maas, the Rijnhaven, and the Maashaven. Water on three sides, one exit point towards the city. The neighborhood has approximately 8,000 residents and was for decades the most notorious part of Rotterdam: a sailors' district, brothels, Chinatown, and a harbor environment. That past is visible in the architecture, but the neighborhood itself has radically changed. In recent safety measurements, Katendrecht scored as one of the safest neighborhoods in Rotterdam.

The Peninsula: Water on Three Sides
Katendrecht is built around Deliplein, the central square of the neighborhood. From here, Katendrechtse Lagedijk runs along the Maashaven, and Katendrechtsestraat heads towards the Rijnhaven. On the water, bridges and ferries are located on both sides.
The peninsula location gives the neighborhood its own rhythm. You don't just drive through it. Visitors come for a reason. The converted warehouses along the Rijn- and Maashaven are the most distinctive homes. High ceilings, industrial details, large windows overlooking the water. Thirdly, there are extensive new construction projects at the head of the peninsula: De Bund (approximately 480 apartments in two towers), Bay House, Porter House, and the large Codrico project where a former factory site is being converted into 1,500 homes, including a new 220-meter tower. This will be the fastest-growing part of the neighborhood in the coming years.

For decades, Katendrecht was synonymous with the downside of the port city. The neighborhood was home to the only Chinatown in the Netherlands, dozens of sailors' pubs, and an active prostitution scene. Until the 1990s, the area was considered dangerous and run-down.
The turnaround began with large-scale demolition and urban renewal around 2005. Social housing was renovated or replaced. Young residents and entrepreneurs moved to the peninsula, attracted by low rents and character. The Fenix Food Factory, opened in 2014 in a former warehouse, became a catalyst for the transformation. Fenix Food Factory and the Hospitality Scene
The Fenix Food Factory in the historic warehouse on Veerlaan is the culinary heart of Katendrecht. An indoor market with artisanal producers: bread, cheese, coffee, craft beer, wines, vegetables. The hall offers space for dozens of small entrepreneurs and is open seven days a week. Beers from breweries across the region are served from the 32 taps of the associated brewery.
Deliplein is the second center. Terraces, coffee bars, restaurants, and small shops surround the square. The hospitality industry targets residents, not tourists. This makes the square livelier and less forced than similar hotspots elsewhere in the city.
The ss Rotterdam, the former flagship of the Holland America Line, is moored at the quay and offers a hotel, restaurant, and museum. The Netherlands Photo Museum will open in 2025 in Warehouse Santos, eight floors with a rooftop restaurant terrace overlooking the Maas.

Bus 77 runs via Zuidplein and Rijnhaven metro station to the ss Rotterdam. Buses 75 and 76 connect the neighborhood with Kop van Zuid and the city center. Katendrechtsestraat has a bus stop approximately 300 meters from Deliplein.
The waterbus stops at the quay near the ss Rotterdam and connects Katendrecht with Dordrecht, Ridderkerk, and other Maas locations. For commuters working outside Rotterdam, this is an attractive option.
Cycling is the most common mode of transport. The city center is ten to fifteen minutes away across the Erasmus Bridge or through the Maastunnel. Kop van Zuid is within walking distance.
On-street parking requires a resident permit. Q-Park Rijnhaven parking garage offers parking spaces close to the metro station.
Suitable for Families, Expats, and Starters
Katendrecht attracts a diverse mix of residents. Young professionals and small families form the largest group. The neighborhood has two primary schools: OBS De Schalm, with a profile focused on outdoor learning and performing arts, and De Globetrotter, a Dalton school with more than 500 students spread across two locations. Kaappark offers outdoor space.
Expats find in Katendrecht a neighborhood with an international character and good connections. The supply of furnished homes is more limited than in Kop van Zuid but is growing with new construction.
Starters can still enter at a lower price level in the workers' homes and smaller apartments than in the city center or Kop van Zuid, although the supply is becoming tighter. The popularity of the neighborhood is driving up rental prices.
