Rent a Home in Rotterdam City Center
No canals, but a skyline. Rotterdam City Center is the only city center in the Netherlands with residential towers, the Markthal as a neighborhood canteen, and the Erasmus Bridge as a view from your window.
Rotterdam City Center was built on the ruins of the 1940 bombardment. What stands today is largely post-war: wide avenues, open squares, and architecture that exists nowhere else in the Netherlands. The Coolsingel, the Lijnbaan, the Markthal, the Cube Houses. It is a center that doesn't look back but builds forward. Those who rent an apartment in Rotterdam City Center live in the most architecturally daring city center in the country. With approximately 41,200 inhabitants (2023) and more than 22,000 homes, 73% of which are rental properties, it is also a district made for renting.

Stadsdriehoek and the Laurenskwartier
The Stadsdriehoek (City Triangle) is the historic heart. Bounded by the Coolsingel, the Schiedamsevest, and the Nieuwe Maas. The Laurenskerk, the only medieval building to survive the bombardment, stands here. The Grotekerkplein surrounding it is one of the few places in the center with a historic scale.
The Markthal stands on the Blaak: the horseshoe-shaped MVRDV building from 2014 with 228 apartments above an indoor market. Piet Blom's Cube Houses are next to it. The Binnenrotte, the square in front of the Markthal, hosts one of the largest outdoor markets in the Netherlands on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The Wijnhaven and the Leuvehaven, on the waterfront, combine a historic museum harbor with modern residential buildings.
The Laurenskwartier has changed significantly over the past ten years. More hospitality venues, more expensive apartments, more young professionals. It is the part of the center that gentrified the fastest.
Cool and the Witte de Withstraat
Cool is the neighborhood around the shopping area and the Witte de Withstraat. The Lijnbaan, Europe's first car-free shopping street in 1953, runs through it. The Koopgoot (Beurstraverse) beneath it connects the shopping area with the Coolsingel. The Karel Doormanstraat, the Meent, and the Hoogstraat complete the shopping circuit.
The Witte de Withstraat is Rotterdam's nightlife street. Bars, restaurants, galleries, and the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. On Friday and Saturday evenings, it's packed. On Tuesday mornings, it's quiet enough for coffee. The homes above are highly sought after: living on an upper floor on the Witte de Withstraat means living in the heart of Rotterdam's cultural scene.
Het Scheepvaartkwartier: 19th-Century Rotterdam
Het Scheepvaartkwartier and Nieuwe Werk form the counterpoint. Where the rest of the center is modern, here stand 19th-century mansions and monumental buildings. Het Scheepvaartkwartier has 98 national monuments. The Westzeedijk runs along it, towards the Museumpark and the Euromast.
This is the most expensive part of Rotterdam City Center. The homes are larger, the streets quieter, the facades stately. Those looking for a spacious apartment with character and willing to pay more will find it here. The Museumpark is around the corner, with the Kunsthal and the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (2021).
Oude Westen: the West-Kruiskade and the Nieuwe Binnenweg
The Oude Westen (Old West) lies west of the Coolsingel. The West-Kruiskade is Rotterdam's multicultural shopping street: Asian supermarkets, Surinamese toko's, Turkish bakeries. The Nieuwe Binnenweg offers vintage shops, eateries, and a unique atmosphere that feels more like Amsterdam-West than Rotterdam City Center.
Oude Westen is more compact and livelier than Het Scheepvaartkwartier. The homes are smaller, the rents lower. It is the neighborhood for tenants who want to live in the city center without paying the highest price. The atmosphere is direct, multicultural, and unpolished.
CS-kwartier and Dijkzigt
The CS-kwartier, around Rotterdam Central Station, is the most modern part of the center. The station itself, reopened in 2014, is an architectural statement. The residential towers around it are growing in number. It is the place where Rotterdam most resembles an international city.
Dijkzigt is located near the Museumpark, between the Erasmus MC and the museums. It is a quiet enclave in the center. The Erasmus MC, the largest university medical center in the Netherlands, is right next to it. For people working in healthcare, Dijkzigt is the neighborhood where you walk to work.

Residential Towers, Upper Floors, and Lofts
The housing supply in Rotterdam City Center is different from any other Dutch city center. High-rise is the norm. Residential towers like Montevideo, De Rotterdam, and the Maastoren define the skyline. But the center also offers upper floors in post-war reconstruction buildings, lofts in converted office buildings, and mansions in Het Scheepvaartkwartier.
Most rental homes are apartments. Studios, one-bedroom apartments, and larger homes in towers with city or Maas river views. Ground-level homes are scarce. Those looking for a garden should look outside the center. Those looking for a balcony on the twentieth floor are in the right place here.
Central Station: All of the Netherlands Within an Hour
Rotterdam Centraal is one of the best-connected stations in the Netherlands. Intercity trains to Amsterdam (40 minutes), The Hague (20 minutes), Utrecht (40 minutes), and Breda (30 minutes). The Thalys and Eurostar to Brussels and Paris depart from here. Metro lines A, B, C, and D cross the center with stations like Stadhuis, Beurs, Blaak, and Eendrachtsplein. Tram lines 7, 8, 21, and 25 serve the neighborhoods.
The center is compact enough for cycling. Most amenities are within ten minutes. Parking is expensive and limited. Those with a car can drive into the city via the A20, A15, or A16. But for most residents, the bicycle or metro is the daily mode of transport.
Architecture City of the Netherlands
Rotterdam City Center is the laboratory of Dutch architecture. The Markthal, the Cube Houses, the Depot Boijmans, the Erasmus Bridge. Buildings by Rem Koolhaas, Piet Blom, and MVRDV stand side by side here. Living in the center means living among icons.
