Rent a Home in Zeeheldenkwartier, The Hague

The Hague's equivalent of Amsterdam's De Pijp district. Small shops, good coffee, 19th-century facades, and a weekly market on Prins Hendrikplein. Zeeheldenkwartier is the neighborhood where young professionals in The Hague choose to rent.

The Zeeheldenkwartier is nestled between the city center and the Statenkwartier. The streets bear the names of naval heroes: Piet Hein, Zoutman, Van Speijk. The neighborhood was developed in the late 19th century and has never been demolished. What stands here is largely original: workers' homes, upper-lower apartments, townhouses with Art Nouveau details. With approximately 12,900 residents (2025) and 6,868 homes, it is a densely built-up area. Two-thirds of the homes are rental properties. Those who rent an apartment in the Zeeheldenkwartier live in a protected cityscape, within walking distance of everything.

Prins Hendrikstraat and Piet Heinstraat: The Shopping Streets

Prins Hendrikstraat is the backbone of the neighborhood. No H&M or Zara, but a cheese shop, a record store, an Italian deli, a gallery. The entrepreneurs are local, and the window displays change with the seasons. Every week, the Zeeheldenmarkt (Heroes' Market) is held on Prins Hendrikplein, offering vegetables, bread, and flowers.

Piet Heinstraat runs parallel to it and offers a similar experience on a smaller scale. Coffee shops that roast their own beans, a design store, a bookstore. Zoutmanstraat connects the two. It's a triangle of streets where you'll find everything you need daily, without ever stepping into a chain store.

Compact, Creative, and Full of Character

The Zeeheldenkwartier is often compared to De Pijp in Amsterdam. Rightly and wrongly so. Rightly, because both neighborhoods are 19th-century, densely built, popular with young professionals, and teeming with hospitality venues and small shops. Wrongly, because the Zeeheldenkwartier is smaller, less touristy, and more affordable.

The neighborhood attracts creatives, starters, and young families. The population is mixed: students next to older residents who have lived there for thirty years. Artists next to civil servants who bike to the Binnenhof. There is gentrification pressure, rents are rising, but the neighborhood has not yet reached the price level of the Statenkwartier or the Archipelbuurt.

Upper Floors, Ground-Floor Apartments, and Courtyards

The homes in the Zeeheldenkwartier are compact. The majority consist of upper-lower apartments: a ground-floor apartment with garden access, an upper-floor apartment with views over the roofs. Additionally, there are multi-story apartments, studios, and a few single-family homes. The ceilings are lower than in the townhouses of the Statenkwartier, the rooms narrower. But the homes have character: wooden floors, fireplaces, original brickwork.

The entire Zeeheldenkwartier is a protected cityscape. This means: no demolition for new construction, no significant changes to the facades. What you rent will look the same in ten years. It also means that the supply isn't growing. Homes are rented quickly. Respond the same day.

Tram 16 as the Artery

Tram 16 runs right through the Zeeheldenkwartier, connecting the neighborhood with Den Haag Centraal and Hollands Spoor. Tram 17 stops on Zoutmanstraat and Elandstraat. Tram 3 serves Van Speijkstraat. Den Haag Centraal is a ten-minute walk or two tram stops away.

The neighborhood is compact enough to do everything on foot. The city center is a five-minute bike ride, Scheveningen a fifteen-minute ride. Parking is paid and scarce. The Zeeheldenkwartier is a 19th-century neighborhood without parking garages. A car here is a luxury, not a necessity.

The Hague's "De Pijp"

Independent shops, coffee places, galleries, and a weekly market. The Zeeheldenkwartier has the same energy as De Pijp in Amsterdam, without the tourists and at lower rental prices.

Protected Cityscape

19th-century facades with Art Nouveau details, a rectangular street plan, and no new construction disrupting the aesthetics. The neighborhood is protected and will remain as it is.

City Center Within Walking Distance

Den Haag Centraal is a ten-minute walk, the Binnenhof a fifteen-minute walk. The Zeeheldenkwartier is located in the city center without being a part of it. The peace of a residential area, the proximity to everything.

The Zeeheldenkwartier is not the neighborhood for those seeking a large garden or a parking space in front of their door. It is the neighborhood for those who want to live in the midst of a vibrant area, in a home with history, within walking distance of work, shops, and entertainment. De Duurzame Zeehelden (The Sustainable Sea Heroes), a residents' initiative, shows that the neighborhood is not only alive but also forward-thinking.
