Rent a Home in Moerwijk, The Hague Southwest
The Zuiderpark as your backyard, its own train station, and the lowest rental prices in The Hague. Moerwijk is the district that offers more than its price tag suggests.
Moerwijk is located in the southwest of The Hague, built during the post-war reconstruction period of the 1950s and 1960s. Porch-access apartments, gallery-access flats, and walkup homes in a spacious, green setting with water features and wide canals. With approximately 21,600 residents (2025), it is one of The Hague's larger districts. The WOZ value has risen in ten years from 90,000 to 224,000 euros (2024), but Moerwijk remains one of the most affordable districts in the city. Those who rent an apartment in Moerwijk live next to The Hague's largest city park, with its own train station and a rental price that allows for financial flexibility.

The Zuiderpark: 130 Hectares of Urban Nature
The Zuiderpark is the largest city park in The Hague and one of the largest in the Netherlands: approximately 130 hectares. It directly borders Moerwijk. Sportcampus Zuiderpark offers multiple sports facilities. There's an indoor swimming pool, an open-air theater, a bowling alley, boat rentals, and the ParkPaviljoen as a restaurant. An art route runs through the park.
For Moerwijk residents, the Zuiderpark is their backyard. Running along the water, walking the dog among the trees, a Sunday afternoon on the grass. It's the kind of park that makes a neighborhood more expensive in other cities. In Moerwijk, it's a bonus not yet reflected in the price.
Moerwijk-North, South, East, and West
The district consists of four neighborhoods. Moerwijk-Noord borders the Erasmusweg and has the most amenities. Moerwijk-Zuid is closest to the Zuiderpark. Moerwijk-Oost and West are the more compact residential areas. The Melis Stokelaan runs as the main axis through the heart of the district: gallery-access flats from the sixties on both sides.
The atmosphere varies by neighborhood, but the basic principle is the same everywhere: post-war reconstruction architecture, straight lines, plenty of air and light. The water features running through the district give Moerwijk a more open character than many other post-war neighborhoods. It is not a cramped part of the city.
Urban Renewal and New Construction
Moerwijk is changing. The district has been subject to urban renewal for decades. The current round combines demolition-and-rebuild with renovation. The MeLeCo project around Melis Stokelaan, Leggelostraat, and Coevordenstraat is replacing outdated porch-access flats with new homes. LEVELS, near Moerwijk station, adds 548 rental apartments. The Moerweg complex will deliver 178 homes.
New construction mixes rental and owner-occupied, affordable and mid-segment. This is the municipality's strategy to strengthen Moerwijk without displacing existing residents. The district is improving, the homes are newer, but affordability remains the guiding principle.
Porch-Access Flats, Gallery-Access Flats, and New Construction
The existing housing supply in Moerwijk consists of post-war reconstruction flats: porch-access apartments and gallery-access flats of three to four stories. The homes are functional: two to three rooms, 50 to 70 square meters. Not large, but efficient. The new construction projects add modern apartments with balconies, elevators, and better insulation.
For renters, Moerwijk is the most affordable entry point into The Hague. Free sector rental prices are lower than in any other district on these pages. The supply is large and changes regularly. Those who react quickly will find a home here.

Moerwijk is honest about what it is: a working-class neighborhood in transition. The post-war reconstruction flats are not the most beautiful buildings in The Hague. The district has no monumental facades or chic shopping streets. But the Zuiderpark is greener than the Westbroekpark, the train station is closer than in the Statenkwartier, and the rental prices leave room for life beyond just housing.
