Rent a Home in Belgisch Park, The Hague

Gentsestraat, Antwerpsestraat, Brusselselaan. Belgisch Park is the villa district with Belgian street names, one hundred meters from the beach and a market on Thursdays. Rental homes between the dunes and the boulevard.

Belgisch Park was developed in 1884, simultaneously with the construction of the Kurhaus. A Belgian entrepreneur, E. Cambier, founded the Hollandsch-Belgische Bouwgrondmaatschappij (Dutch-Belgian Building Land Company) and commissioned the design of a villa district with curved avenues, spacious gardens, and a park as its centerpiece: Belgischeplein. In 1899, the streets were given their Belgian names: Gentsestraat, Luiksestraat, Hasseltsestraat, Brugsestraat. With approximately 8,365 inhabitants and 4,305 households, it is a quiet neighborhood, nestled between Scheveningen and Statenkwartier. Those renting an apartment in Belgisch Park live in a state-protected cityscape, within walking distance of the beach and dunes.

Gentsestraat and Stevinstraat: The Beating Heart

The intersection of Gentsestraat-Stevinstraat is the center of Belgisch Park. Shops, terraces, a market on Thursdays. It's not a large shopping street, but a neighborhood square where you do your groceries and run into acquaintances. The market sells daily goods, fashion, and flowers.

Eén Gentsestraat itself offers enough for daily life. A supermarket, a bakery, a few restaurants. The Boulevard and Scheveningen Pier are a five-minute walk away. The Palace Promenade shopping center on the coast adds luxury stores. Belgisch Park is the neighborhood where you have everything without having to go far.

Villas, Mansions, and New Hague School

The architecture of Belgisch Park tells the story of half a century of construction. The oldest villas date from around 1884: neo-styles with spacious gardens. Around 1900, Art Nouveau influences emerged: decorative facades, ornamental wrought iron. After the First World War, the Nieuwe Haagse School (New Hague School) appeared along Badhuisweg: sleeker, more businesslike, but still with attention to detail.

Belgischeplein is the most beautiful spot in the neighborhood. Mansions with graceful facades surround a park with trees. The surrounding streets wind in curved patterns, unlike the rectangular grid of Zeeheldenkwartier or Statenkwartier. It gives the neighborhood a park-like feel.

The northwest side is different. There, in the 1970s and 1980s, tower blocks were built that disrupt the historical image. The Carlton Beach Hotel and the new developments near Zwolsestraat do not match the rest of the neighborhood. This is the part where Belgisch Park is not quite Belgisch Park.

Between the Beach and Westbroekpark

The location of Belgisch Park is its greatest asset. To the west are the dunes and the beach, one hundred meters from the outermost streets. To the north, it borders Westbroekpark with its rose garden. The Scheveningse Bosjes extend to the edge of the neighborhood. The Oostduinpark offers protected dune landscape.

It is a position no other Hague neighborhood has. The beach is closer than in Statenkwartier. The tranquility is greater than in Scheveningen-Bad. The greenery is more abundant than in Archipelbuurt. Belgisch Park combines everything The Hague has to offer in a small area.

Housing Supply: Scarce but Varied

Of the homes in Belgisch Park, 61% are owner-occupied. The rental portion, about 40%, consists of a mix of apartments in mansions, floor-through homes, and flats on the coastal edge. The average WOZ (Valuation of Immovable Property) value is around 541,000 euros (2025). This places the neighborhood above the Hague average but below Benoordenhout and Vogelwijk.

The homes vary greatly. Large apartments in turn-of-the-century villas, with high ceilings and original details. More compact floor-through homes in the Nieuwe Haagse School blocks along Badhuisweg. And modern apartments in the new developments in the coastal zone. The supply is limited. Belgisch Park is a small neighborhood, and what becomes available quickly finds a tenant.
