Renting a Home in Ypenburg and Leidschenveen, The Hague

VINEX districts with single-family homes, spacious gardens, and a RandstadRail station just around the corner. Ypenburg and Leidschenveen are the youngest districts of The Hague, built for families seeking space without leaving the city.

Ypenburg and Leidschenveen were built on the site where Ypenburg Airport operated until 1992. From 1997 onwards, thousands of VINEX-style homes were built here: single-family homes with gardens, playgrounds on every corner, wide avenues with young trees. The district combined has approximately 50,000 inhabitants and has been an official part of The Hague since 2002. Those renting a home in Ypenburg or Leidschenveen choose suburban living with a train station, a RandstadRail stop, and the highway within easy reach.

Ypenburg: Islands, Avenues, and Villa Park

Ypenburg consists of multiple neighborhoods, each with its own layout. The Waterbuurt (Water District) is the most striking: homes distributed over eleven small islands, literally surrounded by water. Bosweide (Forest Meadow) is the villa park section: detached houses behind tall hedges. De Singels and Morgenweide are located around the shopping center. De Lanen (The Avenues) offers terraced houses on wide streets.

It is a district designed from the drawing board. Everything is just right: the playgrounds, the bike paths, the distance to the school. What it sometimes lacks is the organic messiness of an old city district. But for those seeking space, safety, and clarity, Ypenburg delivers just that.

Leidschenveen: More Compact but Similar

Leidschenveen, on the other side of the highway, is similar but slightly more compact. The same VINEX construction, the same target group, but with smaller plots and more apartments. De Vlietzoom, on the edge of Leidschenveen, offers a greener character with water and walking paths.

The difference between Ypenburg and Leidschenveen is subtle. Ypenburg has more variation in housing types, from waterfront homes to villas. Leidschenveen is more uniform but also slightly more affordable. Both share the same amenities and accessibility.

Shopping Center, Schools, and Sports Facilities

Winkelcentrum Ypenburg (Ypenburg Shopping Center) is the amenity hub of the district. Supermarkets, shops, restaurants, all under one roof or around a square. It's not a charming shopping street, but a complete shopping center that does what it needs to do.

Primary schools are spread throughout both districts, within walking distance of the homes. A sports center with a swimming pool offers recreation. De Dobbeplas and Delftse Hout, recreational areas east of the district, add nature. General practitioner practices, pharmacies, and childcare are all present. The district is designed as a complete living environment.

Single-Family Homes, Apartments, and Waterfront Homes

The housing supply is predominantly single-family: terraced houses with front and back gardens, two stories, three to five rooms. In the Waterbuurt, there are homes directly adjacent to the water. In Bosweide, they are detached villas. Around the shopping center and in Leidschenveen, there are also apartments.

The rental market is smaller than in the city center. Most homes are owner-occupied. What appears on the rental market are often single-family homes in the mid-to-high price segment. For families who want to rent a house with a garden, the offer here is greater than in any other district of The Hague.

RandstadRail, Train, and Highway

Accessibility is one of the district's strongest points. RandstadRail stops at Leidschenveen and Forepark, with a direct connection to the center of The Hague and Rotterdam. Den Haag Ypenburg train station offers Sprinter connections towards Gouda and Den Haag Centraal. Trams 15 and 19 serve the neighborhoods.

The A4 runs along the west side, the A12 along the south side. The Prins Clausplein interchange is directly adjacent to the district. For motorists, it is the most accessible district in The Hague. By bike, the center can be reached in twenty to twenty-five minutes. It's not close, but it doesn't need to be: the amenities are all there.

Ypenburg and Leidschenveen are not districts with an ancient history or a trendy shopping street. They are districts built for living: safe, spacious, complete. The former airport has become a district where fifty thousand people live. The planes have left, the families have come.
