Rent a Home in Statenkwartier, The Hague
Wide avenues, plane trees, and Frederik Hendriklaan right around the corner. Statenkwartier is one of The Hague's most beautiful residential areas, just a five-minute bike ride from the beach.
Statenkwartier is where The Hague shows its most distinguished side. Wide avenues with mature plane trees, early 20th-century mansions, Art Nouveau facades, and a shopping street simply called "de Fred" by residents. With approximately 10,300 inhabitants (2025) and 5,190 homes, it's a manageable neighborhood. The average WOZ value of 714,000 euros (2025) tells the story: this is an expensive area. But those who rent an apartment in Statenkwartier live in a nationally protected cityscape, within walking distance of the beach, parks, and the city center.

De Fred: Heart of the Neighborhood
Frederik Hendriklaan is the hub of Statenkwartier. Residents do their daily shopping there: vegetable stalls, bakeries, specialty shops, supermarkets. No chains dominating the streetscape, but local entrepreneurs who have been running their businesses for years. Terraces on the pavement, a florist on the corner. De Fred isn't a shopping street you go to; it's the street you visit every day.
Aert van der Goesstraat, towards the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, adds restaurants and cafes to the offering. It's the culinary side of the neighborhood: a bit more chic, a bit quieter than the bustling Fred.
Statenlaan and Frankenslag: The Wide Avenues
Statenlaan and Frankenslag are the two avenues that define the character of the neighborhood. Wide, tree-lined, with mansions on both sides built between 1890 and 1915. The facades are Art Nouveau and Art Deco: ornate details, bay windows, stained glass. Many of these properties have been divided into apartments, but the exterior has been protected as part of the nationally protected cityscape since 1996.
Prins Mauritslaan, Nassauplein, and Willem de Zwijgerlaan complete the network of wide streets. The Geuzenkwartier, the western part of the neighborhood, has streets named after "Geuzen" (Dutch rebels) from the Eighty Years' War. The architecture there is similar, the atmosphere slightly less formal. It is the more accessible part of Statenkwartier.
Monumental Apartments and Mansions
70% of the housing in Statenkwartier consists of apartments, and 26% consists of terraced houses and mansions. Nearly 80% of the homes were built before 1945. That means: high ceilings, spacious rooms, original details. But also: steeper stairs, no elevator, varying insulation.
The apartments are often floors within former mansions. An upstairs apartment of 120 square meters with a view of Statenlaan. A three-room apartment above a shop on de Fred. The rental market here is smaller than in the city center: 39% of the homes are rental properties. What becomes available goes quickly.
Westbroekpark and Scheveningse Bosjes
Statenkwartier borders two of The Hague's most beautiful green areas. Westbroekpark, with its rose garden that wins international awards annually, is on the north side. The Scheveningse Bosjes, an elongated forested area between the neighborhood and Scheveningen, offer walking and cycling paths towards the beach.
Kunstmuseum Den Haag (formerly Gemeentemuseum) is located on the edge of Westbroekpark. Berlage's 1935 building houses the world's largest Mondriaan collection. The Peace Palace, seat of the International Court of Justice, is on the east side of the neighborhood. Two icons of The Hague within walking distance.
