Renting a Home in Loosduinen, The Hague

Older than The Hague itself, with the city's oldest church and Kijkduin just around the corner. Loosduinen is the former village that is now a district of The Hague, offering village amenities and rental homes for those seeking tranquility.

Loosduinen was already a village before The Hague existed. The Abbey Church, built in 1250, is the oldest stone building in the city. Until 1923, Loosduinen was an independent municipality. Its annexation by The Hague changed the borders on paper, but not its character. The village remained a village. With approximately 17,900 inhabitants (2025) and 8,751 homes, the district is larger than most independent municipalities. Those who rent a home in Loosduinen choose a place that feels like it's outside the city, but is still part of it.

Loosduinse Hoofdstraat: The Village Center

Loosduinse Hoofdstraat is the main shopping street of the old village. Daily groceries, a hairdresser, a restaurant, a flower shop. It's modest yet complete. Hildo Kroplaan adds a shopping center for broader shopping needs.

The Loosduins Museum tells the story of the village: its horticultural history, fishing, and the Abbey Church. Residents are known as "peenbuikers" (carrot bellies), a nickname referring to the carrot growers who had their greenhouses here well into the 20th century. The greenhouse horticulture has disappeared, but the name has stuck.

Bohemen, Waldeck, and Houtwijk

The Loosduinen district encompasses several neighborhoods. Bohemen, accessible by tram 3, is a quiet residential area with single-family homes. Waldeck and Nieuw-Waldeck are directly adjacent, with similar housing. Kraayenstein is more compact. Houtwijk, built in the 1980s, has its own character: single-family homes with gardens, some high-rise flats, water, and greenery.

The Kom van Loosduinen is the historic heart. Narrow streets, mixed architecture, a village scale. It is the part that most resembles old Loosduinen. The rest of the district is post-war: functional residential areas built in waves from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Kijkduin: Beach Without a Boulevard

Kijkduin is The Hague's second seaside resort, quieter than Scheveningen. No Kurhaus, no boulevard with hotels. It does have beach pavilions, dune crossings, and a renovated coastline. The beach is a ten-minute bike ride from the center of Loosduinen.

The Westduinpark, a protected dune area, stretches from Vogelwijk to Kijkduin. It is the green ribbon connecting Loosduinen to the coast. On Sundays, residents walk through the dunes to the beach. In summer, Kijkduin is busier, but never as crowded as Scheveningen.

Single-Family Homes, Portico Flats, and New Constructions

The housing supply in Loosduinen is varied. De Kom has a mix of older homes and portico flats. Bohemen, Waldeck, and Houtwijk offer single-family homes with gardens. New construction projects are being added along Loosduinseweg: LOOS, with 78 mid-range rental apartments, is one of the more recent additions.

Loosduinen is more affordable than most western districts of The Hague. Rents are lower than in Statenkwartier, Belgisch Park, and Vogelwijk. For families looking to rent a single-family home with a garden, within cycling distance of the beach, Loosduinen is one of the few affordable options.
