Renting a home in Sint Pieter, Maastricht

A former independent municipality on the eastern flank of the Sint-Pietersberg, within walking distance of Maastricht but with the character of a village.

Sint Pieter is the smallest residential area in Maastricht. 140 inhabitants (2023), 62 homes, 633 hectares, the vast majority of which is nature and hilly terrain. The village was incorporated into Maastricht in 1920 but has never given up its own identity. The Sint-Pietersberg literally begins behind the gardens. The marl caves run under the houses. Fort Sint Pieter from 1702 stands on the northern flank of the hill. Those who live here live in one of the quietest places within the city limits of a city.

A village on the slope

The village center of Sint Pieter is located higher on the hill. This is no coincidence. After a military siege in 1747, the community moved to a safer position on the mountain. The buildings that stand there are therefore more compact than one might expect. Narrow streets, detached houses and mansions in marlstone. 77 percent of the houses date from before 1945.

The Jeker Valley separates Sint Pieter from the city. The Jeker river flows through it, creating a natural transition between the built-up area of Maastricht and the plateau. The Mill of Lombok is located in the valley. The caves of the Sint-Pietersberg, known as Maastricht Underground, are accessible via the Jeker Valley. During World War II, national art treasures, including The Night Watch, were stored in these caves.

What you rent in Sint Pieter

The rental market in Sint Pieter is small. Almost 60 percent of the homes are detached, 83 percent are owner-occupied. What appears on the rental market is mainly a home in a historic building. Studios or small apartments are scarce. The offer consists of larger homes, sometimes detached, sometimes semi-detached, in an environment that is more garden village than city district.

Those looking for a rental home in Sint Pieter need patience. Turnover is low, supply rarely becomes available, and the neighborhood is too small to appear regularly on the market. What is present here, however, is something that does not exist anywhere else in Maastricht: an address at the foot of a plateau, with nature on the doorstep and the city a ten-minute bike ride away.

The Sint-Pietersberg

The plateau is the raison d'être of the neighborhood. Limestone grasslands with special flora, marl quarries that have been carved out for centuries, hiking trails overlooking the Maas and the Belgian countryside below. The ENCI quarry on the south side of the plateau closed in 2018 and is slowly transforming into a nature reserve. This process is still ongoing.

Fort Sint Pieter is located on the northern flank. The fort was built in 1702 and has been expanded several times. It is one of the few forts in the Netherlands that are still largely intact. From the ramparts, you look out over the city.

The Jeker Valley connects Sint Pieter with the Jekerkwartier in the city. The walking route along the river is one of the most beautiful in the region. Anyone who wants to walk out of the city from the Jekerkwartier automatically ends up in Sint Pieter.

Accessibility

Sint Pieter is three kilometers from the center of Maastricht. By bike, that's ten to fifteen minutes. A bus connection runs along the Luikerweg past the village. A car is practical but not necessary. The village is not designed for heavy traffic. The Luikerweg is the only main road.

Maastricht Station is reachable by bike in twenty minutes. For daily commuters, Sint Pieter is much quieter but also much less central than the neighborhoods within the ring roads. That consideration is personal for everyone.

National Art Depot in the Mountain

In 1942, national art treasures, including Rembrandt's The Night Watch, were stored in the marl caves beneath the Sint-Pietersberg. The caves can now be visited as Maastricht Underground via the Jeker Valley.

Fort Sint Pieter

Built in 1702 on the northern flank of the plateau. One of the best-preserved forts in the Netherlands, with views over the city and the Maas. Part of the fortification system that protected Maastricht for centuries.

Former Municipality, Own Character

Sint Pieter was an independent municipality until 1920. That independence has remained palpable: its own village center, a population accustomed to the city but not merging with it, and surroundings that are more hilly terrain than urban fringe zone.
