Rent a Home in Slotervaart, Amsterdam

The green side of Nieuw-West, built around the Sloterplas. Slotervaart offers space, water, and rental properties you won't easily find within the ring road.

Slotervaart is located in the west of Amsterdam, between the Ring A10 and the Sloterplas. The neighborhood was built in the 1950s and 60s as part of Van Eesteren's General Expansion Plan. Light, air, and space were the guiding principles. That's still evident today. Wide avenues, lots of greenery, and the Sloterplas at its center. For renters looking for more square footage without leaving Amsterdam, Slotervaart is a logical choice.

Apartments in Amsterdam

Garden City by the Water

Slotervaart is not a neighborhood that overwhelms you with gabled facades or canals. It is a post-war garden city, designed for living. The Jacob Geelbuurt and Emanuel van Meterenbuurt are typical examples: four-story gallery flats with green courtyards and wide sidewalks. In Slotervaart-Noord, the homes are closer to Sloterpark. In Slotervaart-Zuid, towards the Westlandgracht, you'll find a mix of gallery flats and single-family homes.

Prices are rising on the East Bank of the Sloterplas. Here you'll find homes with water views, and the average WOZ value is higher than in the rest of Nieuw-West. But rental apartments also become available here, especially in new builds.

New Construction and Renovation: What's Changing

The neighborhood is not standing still. On the site of the former tennis park on the north side of the Sloterplas, the ACE project is rising: 565 homes, combined with sports facilities, hospitality, and a community school. Plesman Plaza, on Plesmanlaan, has added 382 rental apartments. And the site of the former MC Slotervaart, which closed in 2018, is being redeveloped.

At the same time, the post-war gallery flats and tenement block flats in parts of the neighborhood are being renovated. This means better insulated homes, new kitchens, and bathrooms. For renters looking for a renovated apartment at a lower price than in Oud-West or De Baarsjes, this is an opportunity.

The Sloterplas: 220 Hectares in the Middle of the City

No other Amsterdam neighborhood has a recreational lake of this size within walking distance. The Sloterplas, created in the 1950s, has been a protected city view since 2024. The surrounding Sloterpark offers a beach, swimming water, running routes, and water sports. Sailing, canoeing, fishing. In the summer, the lido on the north bank is one of the few places in Amsterdam where you can swim without having to go to the IJmeer.

De Nieuwe Meervaart, the cultural center at the corner of Lelylaan and Meer en Vaart, is getting a new 14,000 square meter building. The plans were approved in 2024. Theater, music, and events, soon within walking distance of the Sloterplas.

Overtoomse Veld and Nieuw Sloten: Two Faces

Overtoomse Veld is on the east side, between the A10 and the ring railway line. It is the most urban part of Slotervaart. Closer to the tram, closer to Oud-West, and with an offer ranging from compact upper floors to more spacious apartment homes. Along Pieter Calandlaan and Laan der Hesperiden are supermarkets and shops.

On the other side of the lake is Nieuw Sloten, the expansion neighborhood from the 1990s. Terraced houses, gardens, wide streets. The atmosphere is suburban. Families with children looking to rent a single-family home search here. It's quiet, there's space, and Sloterweg leads you to the old village of Sloten, complete with its own windmill and church tower.

Rental Properties: What Can You Expect?

The housing supply in Slotervaart is more varied than many Amsterdammers realize. The post-war flats offer apartments from 55 to 80 square meters, often with two or three bedrooms. In Nieuw Sloten, the single-family homes are larger: 90 to 120 square meters. New construction projects add studios, two-room apartments, and larger family homes to the offering.

What distinguishes Slotervaart: you get more square meters per euro here than in neighborhoods within the ring road. A three-room apartment that is unaffordable in De Pijp is within reach here. This attracts starters, young families, and people looking for more space from the city center.

Lelylaan Station and the Rest of the City

Amsterdam Lelylaan Station is the hub. Intercity and sprinter trains stop here. Schiphol is ten minutes by train. The Zuidas is one station further. Metro 50, the Ring Line, stops at Henk Sneevlietweg, Lelylaan, and Postjesweg. Trams 1 and 17 run towards the city center.

By bike, you can be at Dam Square in twenty minutes. Vondelpark in fifteen minutes. The A10 is directly accessible via Henk Sneevlietweg for those commuting by car.

Daily Life Around the Sloterplas

Slotervaart is not an entertainment district. It's a neighborhood where you live, do your shopping, and go to the park. The supermarkets are along Pieter Calandlaan and in the shopping strips of the various neighborhoods. For a night out, you go to Oud-West or the city center. That's a conscious choice for most residents: quiet living, and the city is close enough.

The OLVG West hospital is on Jan Tooropstraat, nearby. There are primary and secondary schools scattered throughout the neighborhood. De Meervaart programs theater and music all year round. And then there's the Sloterplas. Swimming in summer, running in autumn, skating in winter when it freezes.

Sloterplas Within Walking Distance

220 hectares of water, beach, and park as your backyard. Swimming, sailing, and running five minutes' walk from your front door.

Lelylaan Station

Intercity, sprinter, and metro from a hub. Schiphol in 10 minutes, Zuidas in 5.

More Square Meters

Larger homes at lower rental prices than within the ring road. Three rooms for the price of two in De Pijp.

Slotervaart is Amsterdam in a different way. No canals, no tourists, but a lake, a park, and homes with space. The city is close. Schiphol too. And rental prices are lower than anywhere else within the ring road. Looking for an apartment, studio, or family home in Slotervaart? Check out the current offerings.
