Rent a Home in Schothorst, Amersfoort

A post-war extension district on the northern edge of Amersfoort, built in two phases in the seventies and eighties, with its own train station and Park Schothorst as a green neighbor.

Schothorst is one of Amersfoort's larger residential areas, with over 11,600 residents (2025). The district consists of two parts: Schothorst-Zuid, built between 1970 and 1980, and Schothorst-Noord, which largely dates from 1983-1986. These two phases are visible in the streetscape. Those considering renting a home in Schothorst enter a district characteristic of its construction period: spacious, green, functional.

Two Phases, Two Faces

Schothorst-Zuid is the older half. The seventies are recognizable in the design of public spaces: green belts between building blocks, parking spaces at the edges of residential streets, apartments along arterial roads, and terraced houses in inner areas. The scale is larger than in the Soesterkwartier. Streets are wider, gardens are larger.

Schothorst-Noord is slightly more recent and has a slightly different building structure. More variation in housing types, smaller apartment complexes, more attention to the transition from private to public. The northern part borders Park Schothorst, an urban park of over 160 hectares. For residents of Schothorst-Noord, this park is the district's backyard.

Park Schothorst

The city park on the northern edge of Schothorst-Noord is one of Amersfoort's larger green areas. The park features walking paths, water features, and recreational opportunities. In the summer, it's a popular park for residents from across the city. For renters in the northern part of Schothorst, the park means walking distance to greenery to an extent not found in the city center or Soesterkwartier.

The park borders Vathorst to the north. The transition from the eighties' architecture to the park, then to the new development of Vathorst, is a unique spatial sequence.

Housing Supply and Rental Market

Schothorst has a rental market share of approximately 37%. The vast majority of homes are privately owned. This share is lower than in the City Center but comparable to other post-war expansion districts. The available rental market supply consists partly of social housing (34% of the total housing stock), but there is also a free-sector segment of private landlords.

Housing types vary. Apartments in smaller blocks from the seventies and eighties are the most common rental type in the free sector. Some terraced houses are also available for rent. Those seeking a larger home with a garden in Amersfoort, who find the City Center too confining or Vathorst too far, will find an intermediate option in Schothorst.

The construction from the seventies means insulation is less than in new builds. Double glazing has now been installed in most homes, but energy labels vary. Inquire about the label class before renting.

More Spacious Homes than the City Center, More Compact than Vathorst
