Randenbroek is one of Amersfoort's older post-war extensions. The district was developed in the 1950s and 1960s to accommodate the growing population outside the medieval city center. As of 2025, the district has 7,510 inhabitants with a population density of almost 4,800 people per km², which is high for Amersfoort standards. More than half of the homes, 52%, are available for rent. Renting a home in Randenbroek provides access to a neighborhood that is a five-minute bike ride from the city center but has a very different pace.

1950s Urban Planning

The neighborhood bears the hallmarks of its construction period. Green buffers between residential blocks, separate lanes for cars and bicycles, apartments along major roads, and smaller gallery apartments and terraced houses in the inner areas. The layout is more spacious than that of the City Center and denser than Schothorst or Vathorst.

The structure gives Randenbroek a certain calmness. There is little through traffic on the residential streets. The green spaces are wide. The trees are old enough to provide shade. Park Elisabeth, on the south side of the district, offers an outlet for residents who want to be outdoors without having to leave the city.

Housing Supply

The rental market share of 52% is high for a residential area this close to the center. This share is a result of the construction period: many homes were originally built as social housing and partly flowed into the free market sector in the decades that followed. The free market offering consists of privately rented gallery apartments, apartments in medium-sized complexes, and a limited number of ground-floor terraced houses.

The homes are solid 1950s and 1960s construction. This often means no top-class insulation but also a sturdy construction. Some of the stock has since been renovated, with improved insulation and new installations. Check the energy label for each property separately, as the quality varies greatly.

Randenbroek is more compact than Schothorst and more spacious than the City Center. For renters who want the center but not its density, the district is a logical choice. The distance to the historic core is five to ten minutes by bike.

Daily Life

Randenbroek has its own facilities: shops, an primary school, a pharmacy. For larger purchases, the center is five minutes away by bike. The weekly market on the Hof in the city center can be reached on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Park Elisabeth on the southern edge is the district's recreational area. Walking paths, lawns, a pond. The park borders the higher-lying forested areas on the south side of the city. Those who choose Randenbroek and like to walk have the park on their doorstep and the forested areas within a short cycling distance.

Accessibility

Amersfoort Centraal station is a ten-minute bike ride away. A bus connects the district with the city center for those who prefer not to cycle. The Randenbroek ring road gives car owners a quick connection towards the A28 and A1. Parking in the district is easier than in the City Center: in most streets, parking is possible without a permit, although there are zones where this is changing.

High Rental Market Share Close to the City Center

More than half of the homes in Randenbroek are rental properties. In combination with its location, five to ten minutes by bike from the City Center, this makes Randenbroek one of the most accessible neighborhoods in Amersfoort for tenants.

Park Elisabeth on the Edge of the District

The city park on the south side of Randenbroek provides residents with a green recreational area within walking distance. Walking, cycling, being outdoors without having to leave the city. From the park, the forested areas south of Amersfoort can be further reached by bike.

Post-War Construction with a Spacious Layout

The 1950s and 1960s urban planning of Randenbroek has resulted in wide green strips, separated traffic flows, and quiet residential streets. The district is denser than Vathorst but quieter than the City Center. A middle ground that offers exactly the right balance for many tenants.
