Renting a Home in Diezerpoort, Zwolle

One of Zwolle's oldest inhabited areas, directly west of the city center, with a mix of 1930s architecture, post-war apartments, and newer developments.

Diezerpoort directly borders the western side of Zwolle's city center. 10,970 inhabitants (2025), a population that has grown steadily over the past ten years. The district combines pre-war streets along Meppelerstraatweg with post-war gallery flats and more recent additions. This layering makes Diezerpoort one of the most varied neighborhoods in the city, both in terms of architecture and residents.

Historic Ground, Varied Architecture

The name refers to the Diezerpoort, the medieval city gate that once marked the western entrance to Zwolle. The area behind it has been inhabited since the tenth century. This long history has not resulted in a uniform streetscape, but rather a neighborhood that reveals a different era on each street.

The Meppelerstraatweg boasts the most characteristic architecture of the district: 1930s architecture with wide facades and details no longer seen in rapid post-war construction. Hogenkampsweg and Langenholterweg are the main arteries. In between lie the quieter residential streets, interspersed with post-war flats built in the 1950s and 1960s.

More recent projects such as Diezerhof have added new-build apartments. As a result, the district has not stood still in one period but continues to acquire new layers.

What You Can Rent

The offering in Diezerpoort is broader than in most Zwolle neighborhoods. Studios and two-room apartments in post-war gallery flats for those who want affordable central living. Larger apartments in new-build complexes for those seeking modern finishes. Upper floors in 1930s buildings for those who want historical character without the city center price tag.

The district has a higher proportion of rental properties than the average Zwolle neighborhood, which increases the supply on the market. Competition exists but is less fierce than in the city center or Assendorp.

Daily Life

Diezerpoort has its own amenities structure: shops along the main thoroughfares, a diverse mix of hospitality venues and daily shops. The city center is three to five minutes by bike. Zwolle Station is accessible via the city center in a fifteen-minute walk. The neighborhood is compact enough to live without a car but spacious enough not to feel like you're on top of each other.

The diversity of residents is great. Families, students, seniors, newcomers, and long-time Zwolle residents live side by side here. It is the neighborhood where the city is most authentically itself, without the tourist layer of the city center or the homogeneity of new-build areas like Stadshagen.

1930s Architecture on Meppelerstraatweg

The characteristic buildings along Meppelerstraatweg date from the 1930s. Wide facades, careful details, a scale that post-war construction never achieved. It is the most coherent historical streetscape in the district.

Growing Neighborhood on the City Edge

The population grew from 9,720 inhabitants in 2013 to 10,970 in 2025. New construction projects like Diezerhof add apartments to an already mature neighborhood. Diezerpoort is growing without losing its character.
