Rent a Home in Bovenveen, Voorburg

A post-war gallery flat district built in two phases in the 1940s and 1950s, located in the Vlietzone on the edge of the city centre, with a housing stock consisting almost entirely of gallery flats.

Bovenveen is a quiet residential neighbourhood on the southeastern edge of Voorburg's city centre. The district was developed in two phases: the first buildings between Nicolaas Beetslaan and Bruijnings Ingenhoeslaan followed an expansion plan from 1938 with adjustments from 1953. The area south of Bruijnings Ingenhoeslaan was developed from 1955 onwards. The result is a neighbourhood typical of the post-war reconstruction period: three-story gallery flats, overhanging roof planes, brick facades, granite stairwells with four to six front doors per block. Renting a home in Bovenveen means choosing a stable residential area a short distance from Herenstraat and the Vliet.

The Vlietzone

Bovenveen is part of the Vlietzone, the green waterfront area along the Vliet that the municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg designates as a recreational and ecological zone. The Vliet is an excavated canal running from Leiden via Voorburg to Rotterdam. Along the water, there are walking routes, mooring places for boats, and recreational opportunities. In the summer, it is an active waterway.

The proximity of the Vliet gives Bovenveen a spatial advantage over the more urban parts of Voorburg. The water is within walking distance. Those who walk along the Vliet for work in the morning find it closer in Bovenveen than in most other districts.

Post-War Gallery Flat Construction

The architecture of Bovenveen is uniform and recognizable. Three-story gallery buildings with four to six front doors per block. The homes typically have three to four rooms with a living area of seventy to ninety square meters. Ground-floor homes sometimes have access to a private garden or garden section. Upper-floor homes have a balcony or roof terrace.

This uniformity is not a disadvantage. The construction quality of the reconstruction period is solid. Structures are sound. Most homes are now equipped with double glazing, and some of the buildings have had facade insulation installed. Energy labels vary per complex and per intervention by the owner.

Housing Supply

Bovenveen has a relatively high rental market share, a consequence of the social housing period in which the neighbourhood was built. Part of the housing stock has since entered the free sector through sales to private landlords or investors. The free sector supply largely consists of apartments in gallery buildings.

The neighbourhood attracts tenants looking for affordable housing within cycling distance of Voorburg's city centre and the train connection to The Hague. The scale of the gallery flats suits single-person households and couples. Families looking for more space are more likely to look at Essesteijn or Voorburg-West.
