Room for Rent in Almere: The Complete Guide by District
Affordable living in the youngest city in the Netherlands, half an hour from Amsterdam.
Almere isn't the first city you think of when looking for a room — and that's precisely why it can be a smart move. While room prices in Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Haarlem continue to rise, Almere offers a real alternative: modern homes, space, six train stations, and Amsterdam Central thirty minutes away. The city consists of six districts, each feeling like its own place, from the urban Almere Stad to the village-like Almere Haven. For students at Windesheim Flevoland or ROC Flevoland, starters with a first job, and young professionals commuting from Almere to Amsterdam, a room here is often the fastest way to an affordable place to live.

Why Almere for Room Seekers?
Almere celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2026 — it is literally the youngest city in the Netherlands. Everything was built after 1976, which means: wide streets, modern homes, good insulation, and no issues with steep staircases or noisy floors. For room residents, this is relevant: you share a home designed for contemporary living comfort, not an old canal house split into cramped rooms.
The public transport network is a big plus. Almere has six stations: Centrum, Muziekwijk, Parkwijk, Poort, Buiten, and Oostvaarders. From Almere Centrum, intercity trains depart to Amsterdam (25 min), Utrecht, Zwolle, and even Groningen. Sprinter trains stop at all stations. This makes it realistic to live in Almere and study or work elsewhere.
And then there's the cost. A room in Almere is, on average, hundreds of euros per month cheaper than a comparable room in Amsterdam. That difference isn't offset by travel time — the train is fast and frequent.
What Types of Rooms Can You Find Here?
The available options differ from traditional student cities. In Almere, you won't find 1960s student flats, but rather rooms in modern homes and apartments.
Private Room in Shared House
The most common option. A private bedroom in a single-family home or apartment, with a shared kitchen and bathroom. Often 10–20 m².
Studio
Independent living with a private kitchen, bathroom, and front door. More compact (20–35 m²) but completely private. Higher rent.
Live-in Landlord Room (Hospitakamer)
A room in the landlord's home. Often affordable and quickly available, but with less privacy. The landlord can terminate the contract without a reason for the first nine months.
Pay close attention to the difference. A private room in a shared house is the most common and affordable. A studio is more expensive but offers complete independence. Live-in landlord rental is a separate legal regime — be well-informed about your rights before signing.

The Districts: Where to Look for a Room?
Almere consists of six districts, each with its own station (or multiple) and character. For room seekers, three districts are most relevant.
Almere Stad — Most Options and Best Amenities
The heart of Almere, with the main station, shopping center Almere Centrum, hospitality, cinema, and the Weerwater lake. Here you'll find the largest selection of rooms, spread across neighborhoods like Filmwijk, Muziekwijk, Stedenwijk, and Danswijk. The apartments are modern, distances are short, and you're within walking distance of Windesheim Flevoland. In terms of atmosphere, it's the most urban of all districts. Disadvantage: room prices here are slightly higher than in Buiten or Haven.
Almere Poort — Modern and Close to Amsterdam
The newest district, on the western tip of Almere and thus closest to Amsterdam. Almere Poort has its own station, beach (Almeerderstrand), and is still growing rapidly. The homes are new, the population in the area is young, and amenities are increasing. Rooms here are often in new-build homes — spacious and well-insulated. The train journey to Amsterdam Central from Almere Poort station is the shortest. Popular with young professionals who commute daily.
Almere Buiten — More Spacious and Affordable
East of Stad, with its own center and station. Almere Buiten is greener, quieter, and average room prices are lower. The neighborhoods are spaciously designed with many single-family homes — rooms here are often in private homes where a bedroom is rented out. ROC Flevoland has a branch in this district. Suitable if you want more space and don't mind a few extra minutes on the train.
Almere Haven — The Village Alternative
The oldest district of Almere, with a cozy harbor, narrow streets, and a more village-like character than the rest of the city. The selection of rooms here is the smallest, but the atmosphere is the most intimate. Ideal if you prefer peace over urban amenities.
What Does a Room Cost?
Prices vary by district, room size, and whether amenities are included.
Pay close attention to what's included in the rent. For all-inclusive rooms, gas, water, electricity, and internet are included. For basic rent, these costs are extra — which can amount to tens to hundreds of euros per month. Always ask in advance what exactly is included, and ask for a specification if the landlord mentions "service costs."
What Should You Look Out For?
The room market has its own rules. A few things particularly relevant for Almere:
Private rentals dominate. Unlike in traditional student cities, there are few large student complexes in the private sector in Almere. Most rooms are offered by private landlords who rent out a bedroom in their home or apartment. This makes the offer more diverse, but also less standardized — every situation is different.
Check the tenancy agreement. Is it a room with co-tenancy, sublease, or live-in landlord rental? Each type has different rights and notice periods. With live-in landlord rental (you live with the landlord), the landlord has a broader right to terminate the agreement for the first nine months. Know what you're getting into.
Registration with the municipality. You must be able to register at the address where you live. Not all landlords allow this — always check this beforehand. Without registration, you may encounter problems with your health insurance, student finance, and other matters.
Deposit. A deposit of one month's rent is customary. More than two months is unreasonable. Ensure the deposit is recorded in writing and take photos of the room upon handover.
How to Quickly Find a Room
The room availability in Almere changes quickly. Affordable rooms in good locations are often gone within days. Here's how to increase your chances:
Set up an alert. Set your filters for district, maximum rent, and room type. You'll receive a notification immediately when something new becomes available.
Respond the same day. A room that comes online in the morning might be taken by the evening. Prepare a short introduction that you can adapt — who you are, what you do, when you want to rent, and how you can be reached.
Be flexible in your district. Almere Stad is the most popular, but Almere Buiten or Poort often offer comparable or better rooms for less money. The train connects all districts — the difference is just a few minutes.
Bring someone to viewings. Two pairs of eyes see more than one. Pay attention to the condition of common areas, meet your potential housemates, and check if the atmosphere is right.
