Rent a Home in Oud-Rijswijk

The historic core of Rijswijk, with a fifteenth-century church, a Herenstraat whose facades date back to the seventeenth century, and a direct tram connection to The Hague Central Station.

Rijswijk has over 61,000 residents (2026) and borders The Hague, Delft, and Voorburg. Oud-Rijswijk is its historic core: the part of the city where the early medieval settlement developed into a village with a church, a town hall, and a commercial street. That structure has been preserved, albeit not without difficulty. In 1974, the municipality decided not to demolish the historic buildings but to restore them. Since then, the core has been steadily refurbished. Renting a home in Oud-Rijswijk means living in an environment that has retained its historical layers, a short tram ride from The Hague.

The Peace of Rijswijk

On September 20, 1697, the peace treaty that ended the Nine Years' War was signed in Rijswijk. The negotiations took place in Huis ter Nieuburch, the former country estate of Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik. The treaty became known as the Peace of Rijswijk. The house no longer stands, but the memory of that moment is still present in the street names and the historical consciousness of the city. In 1697, Rijswijk was a village of modest size but large enough to host ambassadors from across Europe.

This historical status not only influenced the city's name but also the decision to preserve the old core. Rijswijk had something to preserve. The Herenstraat is the tangible outcome of that choice.

Herenstraat and Julianapark

The Herenstraat is the commercial and social backbone of Oud-Rijswijk. On both sides, there are historic facades, shops, restaurants, and terraces. The Oude Kerk (Old Church) at the end of Kerklaan is a fifteenth-century building that survived the fire and the expansion of the city. The Old Town Hall dates from the same period and is still a landmark.

To the east of Oud-Rijswijk lies Julianapark, a twenty-hectare park bordering Landgoed Te Werve. This estate is one of the few historical country estates in the region that has remained largely intact. For residents of Oud-Rijswijk, the park is within walking distance.

Housing Supply

Rijswijk has a rental market share of 51% across the entire municipality. In Oud-Rijswijk, the supply consists mainly of apartments in historic buildings. These include upstairs apartments above shops on the Herenstraat, split townhouses on the side streets, and a limited number of newer infill projects. The homes are typically more compact than in the post-war neighborhoods.

The historical character of the buildings places limitations on major renovations but also ensures an environmental quality that is lacking in 1960s and 1970s construction. Those who rent in Oud-Rijswijk live in an environment that has been consciously protected.

Accessibility

HTM trams 15 and 17 connect Oud-Rijswijk with The Hague Central Station in approximately twenty minutes. Rijswijk Station is a ten-minute bike ride away. The A4 towards Amsterdam and the A13 towards Rotterdam are accessible via the edges of the municipality. Parking in the center is limited but more abundant than in The Hague itself.

Preserved Historic Core After Municipal Decision in 1974

In 1974, the municipality of Rijswijk decided not to demolish the historic buildings but to restore them. That decision gave Oud-Rijswijk its current character. The Herenstraat and surrounding streets have since been refurbished and designed as a protected historic center. In a municipality that built massively after World War II, this was a conscious choice.

Julianapark and Landgoed Te Werve Within Walking Distance

The twenty-hectare park on the east side of Oud-Rijswijk borders Landgoed Te Werve, one of the few intact historical country estates in the region. Walking paths, greenery, tranquility. For a neighborhood so close to The Hague, this access to large green spaces is an unusual advantage.

Peace of Rijswijk: Diplomatic History in a Village Core

The peace treaty of 1697 was signed in a building that has long since disappeared, but the status that the Peace gave Rijswijk still lingers in the historic core. Those who live in Oud-Rijswijk reside in a place that once hosted European diplomacy at the highest level.
