Renting a Home in Uden

The largest village in Brabant, with a shopping center that makes cities envious and wisents within cycling distance.

Uden is difficult to categorize. With about 37,000 inhabitants (2025), it's too large for a village, but it lacks city rights and doesn't feel like a city either. What it does have: an indoor shopping center that serves as a regional service hub for dozens of surrounding villages, direct access to the largest contiguous nature reserve in North Brabant, and a location on the A50 that puts Eindhoven and Den Bosch within a thirty-minute reach. Since 2022, Uden has merged with Landerd to form the municipality of Maashorst, but in practice, the core remains simply Uden.

Houses in Uden

Those considering renting a home in Uden will find themselves in a place that combines city amenities with a village scale. There's no train station, which is the downside. But bus connections to Eindhoven, Den Bosch, and Oss are frequent, and by car, you're on the highway in twenty minutes heading in all directions. The rental market is smaller than in the major Brabant cities, but the offering is more varied than one might expect based on its size.

The center and and Rondeel: living above the shops

The heart of Uden is the Rondeel, an indoor shopping center that is remarkably large for a place of this size. Uden attracts shoppers from Volkel, Odiliapeel, Zeeland, Schaijk, Boekel, and all the hamlets in between. This explains why the range of shops is more suited to a city of 80,000 inhabitants than a village of 37,000. Around the Rondeel are shopping streets, terraces, and a weekly market.

Rental homes in the center are predominantly apartments and upper floors. Single-family homes are scarce here. The advantage: everything is within walking distance. The bus station is around the corner, and the supermarket is downstairs. The disadvantage: the supply is limited and turnover is low. Those seeking more space will need to look further afield.

Bitswijk: a village within the village

Bitswijk functions as an independent neighborhood within Uden. Around Muziekplein, there's a local shopping center for daily groceries, schools are located in the central and southern parts, and the Bitshofpark runs as an elongated green strip through the south of the district. It's the kind of neighborhood where children play in the street and neighbors know each other.

The homes are a mix of terraced houses and semi-detached properties, largely from the seventies and eighties. Gardens are more spacious than what you'd find in the center, and the streets are wide enough for stress-free parking. Bitswijk is not a neighborhood that seeks to stand out, and that is precisely its strength. It is functional, green, and quiet, within cycling distance of the Rondeel.

Zoggel and Hoeven: eighties with variation

Zoggel, south of the center, was built in the eighties on the site of an old hamlet. The architecture varies by street, which makes the neighborhood less monotonous than many other eighties districts. The old hamlet of Hulstheuvel in the southwest has been absorbed into the newer buildings, but its name lives on in street names.

Hoeven, on the east side of Uden, dates from the same period. The neighborhood is located against the edge of the forest, with sports facilities and two petting zoos nearby. The housing supply mainly consists of owner-occupied homes, but single-family homes regularly appear on the rental market. For those who want nature within walking distance without paying the price of a new-build district, Hoeven is a logical option.

Uden-Zuid and Hoogveld: new construction on the green edge

Uden-Zuid, including sub-districts like Velmolen and Park-Zuid, is Uden's most spacious neighborhood. Lots of green, wide streets, a mix of single-family homes and apartments. The neighborhood attracts families who want modern living without moving into the city.

Hoogveld is the newest expansion district, on the southeast side. Construction is still ongoing here. The homes are modern, energy-efficient, and designed according to the latest building requirements. The supply in the rental market is limited because many new builds are sold as owner-occupied homes, but free-sector rental homes are being added. Hoogveld is the place for those who want new construction in Uden, if you are willing to wait for the offer.

Volkel, Odiliapeel, and Zeeland: the villages around Uden

The municipality of Maashorst includes more core areas than just Uden. Volkel, to the northeast, is the village of the airbase. NATO fighter jets take off and land here, and you can hear it. In the immediate vicinity of the base, the noise pollution is noticeable. Further from the runway, Volkel is a quiet village with its own amenities. Until 2015, a building ban was in effect due to the airbase; now, for the first time in decades, new homes are being built again.

Odiliapeel, to the east, is a reclamation village with a close-knit community and a distinctly rural character. Zeeland is located to the north, on the edge of De Maashorst, and has its own shops and schools. Rental homes in these villages are rare, but when something becomes available, they offer something Uden itself cannot: a village community where everyone knows your name.

De Maashorst: wisents within cycling distance

De Maashorst, covering 2,400 hectares, is the largest contiguous nature reserve in North Brabant. Heathland, forest, sand drifts, and open grasslands, all freely accessible. Since 2016, wisents, European bison and the continent's largest land mammal, have roamed here. The parking lot at Schansweg in Uden is the starting point for hiking trails. From the northern districts, you can cycle there in ten minutes.

Regional service center

Uden serves a hinterland of tens of thousands of people. The Rondeel and the surrounding shopping streets attract buyers from across the Maashorst region and beyond. This explains the wide range of shops, the weekly market, and the hospitality you wouldn't expect in a typical village of this size. It makes Uden a practical place to live: you don't have to leave the municipality for daily necessities.

Crossroads on the A50

Uden is located on the A50, the highway connecting Eindhoven with Nijmegen. Den Bosch can be reached in 25 minutes, Eindhoven in half an hour, Nijmegen in 35 minutes. Bus line 305 operates as an express service to Eindhoven via Veghel. A train station is missing, but the location on the highway compensates for car users.
