Rent a Home in Huizen

Former fishing village on the Gooimeer, the most accessible village of 't Gooi, with a harbor that defines its streetscape.

Huizen is the Gooi village situated on the water. That sounds simple, but it is defining. Blaricum has heathland. Laren has studios. Hilversum has broadcasters. Huizen has a harbor, a beach, and the Gooimeer. Those considering renting a home in Huizen are choosing a municipality of approximately 41,000 inhabitants (2024) that began as a fishing village and has never entirely lost that character. The harbor is still there. The boat sheds are still there. And the water is visible everywhere.

Houses in Huizen

What distinguishes Huizen from the other Gooi municipalities is its accessibility. Blaricum and Laren are more exclusive, smaller, and more expensive. Huizen has a broader range of housing, more amenities, and a more diverse population. It is 't Gooi without the price tags of the villa villages. The housing stock consists of single-family homes in the post-war neighborhoods, characteristic buildings in the Old Village, new constructions around the harbor area, and portico flats in the first expansions. The neighborhood determines the type of home, the construction period, and the atmosphere.

The Old Village: Fishing Cottages and Winding Streets

The Old Village is the heart of Huizen. Here stand the oldest buildings: former farms, fishing cottages, narrow streets that did not originate on a drawing board. The Huizer Museum tells the story of fishing and traditional costumes. The village square has catering establishments and an atmosphere that the planned neighborhoods lack.

The housing stock is small and mixed. Old buildings next to later infills, upper floors above shops, and here and there a detached house. The supply in the free sector is scarce. Those who find a home here live in the only part of Huizen that is older than the twentieth century. The charm lies in the irregularity. No two streets are the same.

The Harbor Quarter: Living Where Huizen is Huizen

The harbor area is where Huizen's fishing village DNA is most palpable. The marina, the beach on the Gooimeer, the catering establishments along the water. It is the part of Huizen that visitors know and residents are proud of. The homes around the harbor are newer than in the Old Village: apartments and townhouses from the last two decades, often with water views.

In the reed beds along the Gooimeer, egrets and bitterns breed. Beavers have been spotted. It is nature a stone's throw from the buildings. For tenants who want the water as their daily view and are willing to pay more for it, the Havenkwartier (Harbor Quarter) is the most sought-after address in Huizen.

Zenderwijk and Bovenmaat: The Family Neighborhoods

Zenderwijk and Bovenmaat are the post-war extensions that form the largest part of the housing stock. Built between the 1960s and 1980s, spaciously designed, with wide streets and plenty of greenery. These are the neighborhoods where families settle: terraced houses with front and back gardens, semi-detached houses, corner houses. Schools, sports clubs, and playgrounds within cycling distance.

The architecture is sober. These are not neighborhoods that appear in architecture magazines. But they deliver what they promise: space, tranquility, and a functional living environment. The rental housing supply is widest here. If you are looking for a single-family home with a garden in Huizen, start your search in these neighborhoods.

Huizermaat: The Three Parts

Huizermaat is divided into North, West, and South. It is the largest cohesive residential area of Huizen. Construction dates back to the 1970s and 1980s. The layout varies by section: North is greener and more spacious, West is more compact, South is closer to the amenities of the center. All three parts have a mix of terraced houses and portico flats.

The turnover in Huizermaat is higher than in Zenderwijk or Bovenmaat, which means that something becomes available more often. The homes are solid but not always renovated. When viewing, ask about the energy label and maintenance. For tenants who need a home quickly, Huizermaat offers the most opportunities.

Bijvanck and the Vierde Kwadrant: The Younger Edge

On the south side of Huizen lie Bijvanck and the Vierde Kwadrant. Newer neighborhoods, built from the 1990s onwards. The Vierde Kwadrant stands out for its architecture: the so-called Sphinx houses are a striking feature in the street profile. Water features cut through the neighborhood. The layout is more modern than in Zenderwijk or Huizermaat.

Bijvanck is quieter and is located on the edge of green spaces. The homes are predominantly single-family houses with gardens. It is the neighborhood for tenants looking for the newest housing stock in Huizen without having to go towards the harbor area.

Fishing Harbor on the Gooimeer

The harbor of Huizen is more than recreation. For centuries, the village was a fishing community on the Zuiderzee. The harbor was constructed around 1850. This history is still visible in the Old Village, the Huizer Museum, and the harbor area itself. The Gooimeer provides the views, nature, and character that distinguishes Huizen from the rest of 't Gooi.

The Accessible Gooi

Blaricum and Laren are the exclusive villa villages. Hilversum is the media city. Huizen is the Gooi village with the widest housing offer, the most amenities, and the most diverse population. It is 't Gooi for people who want to live there without the villa price tag.

Nature on Two Fronts

To the west, the Gooimeer with reed beds, egrets, and beavers. To the east, the Gooi heathland and forests. Huizen is at the pivot point: water and forest within cycling distance, in a region otherwise mainly known for heathland and sand.

No Station, But Connected

Huizen does not have a train station. That is the most frequently mentioned practical objection, and it is fair to state that upfront. The connection to the outside world runs via bus line 320, the HOV (High-Quality Public Transport) line that connects Huizen via the A27 and A1 with Hilversum and Amsterdam Amstel Station. Travel time to Hilversum is about twenty minutes, to Amsterdam forty-five minutes to an hour. Those who want to take the train can drive or cycle to Naarden-Bussum, the nearest NS (Dutch Railways) station, a fifteen-minute distance.

Accessibility by car is good. The A1 and A27 are nearby. But the rental market in Huizen is tighter than its village character might suggest. Its location on the Gooimeer and the Gooi nature keep demand high. Good single-family homes go quickly. Ensure income proof and identification are ready, and set up a search alert on our platform. The complete offering of Huizen is in one place.
