Renting a Home in Wijchen

Castle town south of Nijmegen, six minutes by train, with Maas villages and fens in its backyard.

Wijchen Castle stands in the middle of the village. First mentioned: 1392. Rebuilt after a fire in 1906 based on seventeenth-century building plans. The surrounding castle park is public and forms the green heart of the center. It's an unusual focal point for a municipality of this size, and it sets the tone for how Wijchen feels: village-like, but with a layer that goes further back than the post-war expansion areas suggest.

The municipality has about 42,100 inhabitants (2026), spread across the Wijchen core and ten smaller villages, including the historic town of Batenburg on the Maas. Those considering renting a home in Wijchen choose a place ten kilometers from Nijmegen. Wijchen station is on the Tilburg-Nijmegen railway line; the sprinter to Nijmegen takes six to eight minutes, to Den Bosch half an hour. The A73 and A50 are around the corner. It's close enough to work in Nijmegen and far enough away to notice the difference when you come home.

The Center: Shops Around the Castle

The center of Wijchen is built around the castle and the castle park. The shopping streets loop around the park: compact, clear, complete. There is a supermarket, a cinema, catering establishments, and on Saturdays, a market. It's not a center that will surprise you, but it does what it needs to do.

The housing supply in the center consists of apartments above commercial buildings, smaller complexes on the edges of the shopping area, and occasionally a home in the older streets around the castle. For renters who want everything within walking distance and don't need a garden, the center is the shortest route. The supply is small and turnover is low, but the location compensates: station, shops, and castle park within a five-minute walk.

Woezik: The Village That Became a District

Woezik was an independent village. Since 1980, new construction has transformed it into a district of Wijchen. The original village core around Woeziksestraat still exists, but it is now surrounded by the sub-areas of Veenhof, Saltshof, and Hofse Dam. Together, they form a neighborhood of almost 4,000 inhabitants.

Saltshof and Veenhof were built in the 1980s and 1990s: spacious streets, single-family homes with front and back gardens, residential courtyards with play areas. It's the type of neighborhood that attracts families and where children play outside. The homes are larger than in the center, the gardens deeper, the atmosphere suburban. Woezik has its own identity separate from the center of Wijchen. Residents still refer to “Woezik” as a separate village, even though there is no longer a municipal boundary between them.

Wijchen-Zuid and De Blauwe Hof: The Established Shell

South of the center are Wijchen-Zuid and De Blauwe Hof, post-war residential areas that make up most of Wijchen's housing supply. Terraced houses from the 1960s and 1970s, semi-detached houses, and gallery flats along the main roads. The streets are wide, the greenery is mature, the neighborhoods are settled.

These are neighborhoods without particularities, and that is precisely their strength. Homes are affordable compared to the center or Huurlingsedam, amenities are within cycling distance, and the atmosphere is stable. Many families who start renting in Wijchen end up in these neighborhoods. Single-family homes with gardens make up the majority of the supply. Those looking for three or four bedrooms without a new-build price will find the best chances here.

Huurlingsedam: New Construction Since 2009

On the west side of Wijchen lies Huurlingsedam, the new-build residential area that has been developed since 2009. The homes are gas-free, well-insulated, and designed to contemporary standards. The neighborhood is spacious with attention to water and green spaces in the public area.

Huurlingsedam has primarily been a buying neighborhood so far, but the municipality is committed to more rental homes in future expansions in Wijchen-west. For renters looking for new construction, this is the area to keep an eye on. The architecture is modern but understated, the plots are more spacious than in the older neighborhoods, and energy costs are lower due to better insulation. The downside: it's a neighborhood that still needs to mature. The trees are young, the community is under construction.

Batenburg and the Maas Villages

Wijchen is more than just its core. The municipality comprises ten villages, of which Batenburg is the most striking. The former town on the Maas has about 700 inhabitants, a castle ruin, town rights from the fourteenth century, and an atmosphere that is more reminiscent of the Maasland than the Betuwe. Balgoij is next to it, also on the Maas. Overasselt borders the Hatertse and Overasseltse Fens, a nature reserve of wooded river dunes and nutrient-poor fens.

The supply of rental homes in these villages is minimal. Something rarely becomes available, and if it does, it's a single-family home in a small village where you need a car. But for those who consciously choose rural living within a municipality that also offers a train station and a complete center, the Maas villages are worth considering.

Wijchen Castle and the Castle Park

The castle dates from 1392, was rebuilt after a fire in 1906, and is located in the middle of the village. The surrounding castle park is freely accessible and forms the green heart of the center. Shops, restaurants, and the station are within walking distance.

De Berendonck

Recreation area De Berendonck is located west of Wijchen: a large sandy beach, water recreation, mountain bike routes, and a golf course. It's the kind of amenity you wouldn't expect in a municipality of 42,000 inhabitants, but which makes living here concretely more pleasant.

Ten Villages, One Municipality

In addition to the core of Wijchen, the municipality has ten villages, from the historic town of Batenburg on the Maas to the rural Hernen and Leur. The Hatertse and Overasseltse Fens are located near Overasselt. It's a municipality that changes from suburban to river landscape in ten minutes.

Small Enough to Know, Large Enough to Choose

Wijchen is a municipality you can cycle through in half an hour, from Huurlingsedam in the west to the fens near Overasselt in the east. That compactness makes it manageable. You know the neighborhoods, you know the distances, you know where the train stops and where the supermarket is located.

The rental market is tight, as everywhere in the Nijmegen region. But Wijchen offers more single-family homes with gardens than Nijmegen itself, at lower rents. Set up a search alert with filters for Wijchen, have your documents ready (pay slips, employer's statement, copy of ID), and respond the same day. Also look in Wijchen-Zuid and De Blauwe Hof: the post-war neighborhoods attract less attention than Huurlingsedam, but the supply is larger there and the neighborhood is already established.
